Team Formation: In grades 3 through 5, our focus is on providing an instructional experience. Our goal when players are placed on teams in grades 3 through 5 is to balance the teams.
For grades 6, 7, and 8, our focus is to enhance a player’s individual and team's athletic progress. Our selection process is based on objective assessments of student athlete’s skill and attitude. The number of teams per grade can vary depending on the number of players trying out. A and B teams are considered competitive teams and C teams are considered recreational. There are multiple divisions available with varying levels of competitiveness in which teams can participate depending on relative skill level.
Evaluations: To accomplish this team construction, evaluations are held for all grades before the beginning of the season. See St Susanna Boosters Policy Handbook for details. Grades 3-5 goals are to evenly distribute individual’s skill level and abilities determined in the evaluations. Grades 6-8 will create teams based on a ‘blind’ draft in which player skill levels and attitudes determine which team they will be on.
Games: 10 leagues games in addition to pre- and post-season tournaments. Additional tournaments based on grade level.
Practices: Typically 2 practices a week for 60-90 minutes
Tournaments: Based on grade level and team; Balanced teams eligible to play St. Susanna pre-season tournament, post-season tournament as well as up to 2 additional tournaments during the season.
League Tournament: The league tournament is typically played at the end of the regular season in mid to late February.
Our Goals: Grow the players love for the sport of basketball, teach the fundamentals and reinforce the importance of our faith in all we do.
Coaches Corner: Parents are encouraged to volunteer to be head coaches and assistant coaches for grades 3 through 5. Non-parent coaches are required for A and B varsity level teams, but parents are allowed to coach any C level team. No basketball experience is required to coach.
